Healthy Fall Resolutions

Wow, how did September sneak up on us? Students are getting back into the rhythm of school, it’s slightly feeling a little cooler, decorations have been put out at Hobby Lobby, and my boots are peeking out of my closet whispering, “Is it time yet? Is it time yet?”

If you haven’t already figured out I’m a fall lover! There’s just something about the leaves changing colors and the cool breeze that I long for. Fall is a transition period for me. Instead of New Year’s resolutions, I make Fall resolutions. The physical change that happens outside gets me in the mood to change a little bit more of me on the inside. Besides, Christmas and Thanksgiving are times where I love to eat, so it’s important for me to stay on track. Here are my healthy fall resolutions:

Design a fall-friendly breakfast menu.

Breakfast is the most important part of the day. It keeps your metabolism in high gear and keeps you alert and motivated throughout the day. Some days I skip, and end up eating way too big of a lunch. I created this fall-friendly breakfast menu packed with fall flavors like cinnamon, pumpkin, cranberry and apple. You can access my fall-friendly menu here. These are also great snacks for those mid-day cravings.

Commit to exercising four times per week.

Transitioning from the summer months to the colder season with a new routine can help stay motivated to keep working out. I’m really wanting to take up cycling and circuit training. The weather is perfect for biking.

Eat more in-season fruits and veggies.

I’m not big on fall veggies, but this year I’m going to learn how to incorporate them into my meals more often. I have lots of ideas on my breakfast menu above. You can head here to check out what’s in season.

Keep walking.

Fall is one of the best times of year to walk – the air is crisp and not too hot, plus the scenery can’t be beat! My goal: 10,000 steps a week = five miles. My handy-dandy Fitbit will make an easy tracker device and will remind me to get up and move. If it’s raining or too cold outside, I plan on doing mall walks (without my wallet!) or hit up an indoor track. I plan on making multiple trips to the state parks, too!

Take time to decompress.

This is a big one. With all of the fall festivities I enjoy participating in, I can definitely feel stressed at times. My goal is to get at least seven hours of sleep each night and to avoid my phone or the TV for an hour before bedtime. I also plan to read a little bit each night whether it be my current book club read, a bit of scripture or a design magazine.

Prepare a holiday budget.

This is not necessarily a “healthy” resolution, but it’s one that’s just as important. Christmas is coming up which means our budgets can seem to get a little out of hand. Starting in the fall, I make a budget that includes an extra savings pool for Christmas presents. I try to save xxx amount of money per month so that when the holidays roll around, I’m not regretting waiting until the last minute. This is such a lifesaver for my wallet!

Have you tried making resolutions in the fall?

These are great resolutions! And what’s even better is that they’re achievable! I don’t love to exercise, but five miles a week is do-able. I might have to set some of these resolutions for myself, before the cold weather gets here, and I’m tempted to stay cuddled indoors under a pile of blankets. :)

I agree! It’s always better when you have an accountability partner. Find a friend, spouse, sister, co-worker, etc. you will do it with you!! That way you kill two birds with one stone: spending time with someone and getting your workout in.
